Autochtonous dengue in Catalonia
Dengue is a disease specific to tropical countries and transmitted by mosquitoes, although tens of people who have acquired the virus during trips to these areas arrive in Catalonia every year, thus becoming what are called imported cases. Our SCM, as set out in the Protocol per a la vigilància i el control de les arbovirosis transmeses per mosquits, carries out the resulting entomological inspections in the demarcation of Barcelona in order to avoid as much as possible the transmission of the disease since the tiger mosquito is a competent vector. Until the end of October, we had to act in 76 cases of arboviruses, 70 of which were due to dengue.
In Catalonia, at the beginning of August this year, the first case of autochthonous dengue transmission was detected in Tarragona. Later, at the beginning of October, another autochthonous case was reported in the Maresme area and on October 20th, a third suspected case was notified, also in the Maresme area, which was later confirmed by the laboratory.
The notification of these last two cases in the same area has involved a wider epidemiological investigation to delimit the areas of possible transmission and implement additional intervention measures. The corresponding entomological inspections have also been carried out, but even more extended and covering the places where trips have been made. This is a new situation that has not occurred since the beginning of the 20th century.
SCM Municipalities web updated with urban data
Finally, the Municipalities web for monitoring the activity of the SCM has been completed with the urban data screen. Therefore, municipal technicians can consult in real time the activity carried out by our Service in their territory. This is a determined commitment to the transparency and dissemination of our activity towards the councils and entities with mosquito control agreements with the Consell Comarcal. With this new addition, we now have monitoring and control tools in real time in all areas of activity and management:
Delta web, Municipalities web and the Delta mobile application of the Service staff.
WNV in Baix Llobregat
The Central Veterinary Laboratory of Algete in Madrid, reported on August 24, the confirmation of West Nile Virus (WNV) in two horses from El Prat de Llobregat (Baix Llobregat). This is a new primary focus, but epidemiologically related to the focus generated by the yellow-legged gull found in Cornellà also with WNV (RASVE: 2023/6).
As a consequence, it is planned to continue sampling the affected area, to continue expanding knowledge about the distribution of WNV. On the other hand, and on the same date, the Algete Laboratory has also confirmed by real-time PCR of WNV lineage 2 in the samples of a specimen of the common goshawk (Accipiter gentilis) located in the municipality of Lleida in Segrià.
Our Service is collecting samples of mosquitoes in the area that are analyzed to determine the extent of the virus's circulation as well as its lineage.
According to the IRTA-CReSA Epidemiology Service, it has been assessed that the Segrià area can be considered an endemic area (in 2020, 2021 and 2022, WNV circulation was already detected). For this reason, no more active surveillance actions will be carried out on horses. The main action will be to intensify passive surveillance of wild birds and horses within the 10 km radius around the location of the goshawk.
Let us remember that WNV is a disease that can affect birds, horses and humans and in Catalonia it is transmitted by the common mosquito Culex pipiens. More information in: https://www.covb.cat
Telematic measure of water level and temperature
August 2023.This summer the first telematic water level and temperature measurement probe went into operation with which a new system can be started to monitor the flooding of mosquito breeding sites and the water temperature on which it depends the growth rate of the larvae. This first probe must be followed by others in different flooded spaces where mosquito larvae develop. It will also serve to develop a model for activating breeding foci in the delta municipalities where most of these spaces are located.
